Setting an achievable milestone is a good idea no matter what pursuit you are engaged in. Maybe you are saving up for a house deposit, training for a marathon, studying for a PhD or simply like me in this blog aiming for an annual mileage achievement. If you only set your eye on the end point it might seem out of reach or even impossible. Of course you need to keep the final goal in mind. However, breaking it up into sections will help you gain motivation when you pass each of them along the way.

milestone #1
Milestone #1

On Tue afternoon I passed my first milestone in the 8,000 mile commute. It’s hard to believe but that must be 1/8th of the year gone already as I have ridden 1,000 miles in 2019. There have been a few hiccups but nothing too major.

If you want to follow me on my journey you can find my ride logging account here: CycleCommute.CC Strava. I’ll certainly be adding all my commutes on there, as well as any extra top ups.

It was my finger!

Having had the dressing removed from my finger on Mon I’ve been really enjoying the freedom of being able to use it again. Braking and gear changes are a welcome novelty. It was however very numb for a couple of days and still quite tender. (See my post on Best Laid Schemes of you want to see what happened to it).

I don’t get much pain in it now apart from when I catch an edge on something and it pulls up against the nail bed. This normally happens when doing something routine that I don’t even think about.

Like today when I paid a visit to the work toilets. I’d just lined up to take my turn when my nail got caught in my trousers, pulled back from my finger, and caused me to give a mighty yelp! Not exactly the noise you want to be making in that scenario when there are colleagues and managers on either side!

“IT WAS MY FINGER!”, I had to say.

Horn Watch

As I’ve mentioned before there are lots of drivers who shout or toot the horn on their way past. This week I made it to Wed morning’s commute before anyone did so. I think this must be the record for 2019 so far. Maybe it’s down to quieter roads because of school holidays, but whatever the reason it was noticeable.

I wonder if I’ll get through a full week without any abuse this year…

Anyway, it’s great to get off the busy roads when I can and coming home in the dark on a quiet back road is really brilliant for clearing the head. No better way to end the working day.
