Bike Commute Savings:

As well as giving me enjoyment and keeping me fit, the cycle commute also helps to save me money over the long term. For the previous year I have kept track of all my spending on the bikes and bike related purchases. If you have seen my How Much? page you will have noted that I have been comparing it to both estimated car commute and public transport costs.

Watch the savings grow

Bills have now been counted for the last full year and the final comparison is ready…

£ 0
Bike
£ 0
Car
£ 0
Public

Unsurprisingly the bike has come out in first place! However, I am slightly surprised at the SIZE of the saving.

A saving of £1,616.72 over the car is definitely a significant amount. Considering this is the 4th consecutive year with a full cycle commute these savings add up before you know it.

Also, the bike expenditure is not all essentially commuting items as most of it is used for leisure purposes as well. (I have not allowed for any of this though as about 90% of my riding is commuting anyway.)

Taking note of these costs over the last year has been well worthwhile as it means I don’t worry about the odd repair bills that come in, or new equipment that needs purchased. The alternative commuting options are all much harder to swallow!

Hopefully this might encourage others to consider cycle commuting as you can see clearly the bike commute savings available.

It might also add some weight to my argument for buying a new bike, don’t you think? Especially considering it is now over 3 years since my last one was purchased…
