How long have you been cycle commuting?

I didn’t learn to drive till I was 26 so since about 21 I was commuting by bike or on foot. When I moved jobs 11 miles away from home I didn’t really think about using the bike until I got talked into getting a road bike on the cycle2work scheme. This was back in June 2018.Β

To start off I was doing it once or twice a week, but then in 2020 I had a life event that made me change. My wife had a tumour removed and started a 3 year targeted chemo course. Following this I decided to ride my bike every day for 20 consecutive days for at least 20 miles and it was from here I got the bug and I’ve been cycle commuting almost every day since then.

Your Commute

My commute is a 22 mile round trip at its shortest from Stafford to Wolverhampton, in England. It’s a relatively flat route and a mix of main roads and country lanes.

I’m lucky that I can use country lanes for all but about a mile if I want to.

What is the best thing about Cycle Commuting?

Everyone says it but the mental and physical benefits are not to be underestimated!

I have worked various shifts so my commutes have started at 4am or 9pm. Even at those times being on the bike really boosts your mood and I think makes me more productive at work. πŸ‘

Your bikes

Giant TCR

I have a Giant TCR Advanced Pro 0 2017 that I love riding! It’s so responsive.

I also have a Giant TCX 2015 gravel bike that is my main commuter and will cope with any weather.

Any top tips?

Number 1 – Enjoy it!

Whether you are fast or slow take the time to enjoy being outside and appreciate your surroundings…

Also, be confident in the road. Make sure you are far enough from the side so drivers arn’t tempted to squeeze past. Similarly, don’t be scared to take up the lane at junctions and roundabouts.

Anything Else?

Get good overshoes if you’re going to ride in the rain. Nowt worse than wet feet and smelly shoes…

Spatzwear are hands down the best in my book.
