Look what came in the post this week. Lovely shiney new cassettes. Must say I’m pretty pleased with how quickly they came from a Taiwanese eBay seller. They look so good and fresh it’s almost a shame to use them.

Better than jewellery?

Use them I must though. The old ones on my winter ride have been getting progressively worse all week. If you read the skippity-skip post you’ll have seen how bad it was on Tue. By Fri I was almost unable to use the large chain ring as the chain would not engage with the cogs. I was so happy to see the parcel arrive at the end of the week. Perfect timing, just need to make time for fitting it over the weekend.

3,802.6 miles. That’s how much I got out of the old chain and cassette over a 13 month period. I find it can be anything from 3000-4500 miles before I need to change them but I don’t remember them getting quite as bad as this. Lifetime depends a lot on the conditions you ride in and how well they are maintained.

1st Full Week

The first full week of 2019 finished without much further trouble. After Wed’s frost the temperature picked up and it made for some beautiful rides home. Have a look at the CycleCommute.CC Instagram account to see update photos (social media links are in page footer).

I love seeing how many bikes are still out riding. I’m sure there are more this year than in previous winters (although the relatively tame winter no doubt helps). Remember, you are never too pro to wave so give any passing cyclists a nod/smile/wave/high five but don’t just steam on past (thining of you Mr Grumpy who passed me heading into Edinburgh on Fri afternoon).

What better way to end the week than with cake after my ride? We had a birthday in the house this week and I was able to sneak a slice down after I got home.
