Commutes complete!… At least for this year…

As ever, the year of 2019 has absolutely flown in. I think it’s a sign of growing old when each passing year seems to accelerate even quicker than the previous one. However, it’s still great to stop and take stock of what has been achieved.

Final commute of 2019!

When I started this blog I did so with the intention of commuting to work each day on my bike and in doing so riding 8,000 miles. I’m pleased to say both of these targets were met, although it did prove to be a bit of a challenge towards the end! The ride still gives me great pleasure and a massive sense of achievement, but catching a bug in November which lasted for 6 weeks left me feeling drained. My determination got me through it though and the final commutes were ticked off with pleasure.

Despite losing 6 days of work due to sickness my final mileage ended up being a personal record for me of 8,417 miles…

As usual, they are all logged on Strava, because otherwise I might have imagined them! Feel free to look me up and give me a follow on there.

Bike Choices

I ended up using all 4 of my bikes over the course of the year. At the start it was mostly my Vitus road bike that was used with the odd snowy day calling the Focus mountain bike into action. When the good weather started to appear I switched to my carbon Boardman bike which ended up completing the highest mileage of about 5,000. After October I then parked the Boardman and called my Giant road bike into action. This has seen almost constant use since then, apart from 4 days when it was icy.

It might be slightly excessive using 4 bikes, but to do a daily cycle commute will require at least 2 bikes, because there will always be times when something breaks leaving one of them unavailable. Also, having one more suited to bad weather will help enormously.

I’ll update my cost tracker soon, but I’m pretty sure the final annual saving will prove to be significant.

For now I’m going to enjoy what remains of my holiday and attempt to get as many of these bikes back into shape for the new year. Hopefully both them and myself will be ready to spring into action again!

Well done! 8500 miles in a year, more than a lot of people do in their car.
You neglect to mention that you also played competitive squash in East of Scotland
Squash League 18 times (not to mention the training/friendly matches) while
    doing that commute. (Loob)

Thanks lesoigneur! It was a nice surprise to be sat down next to you last week when you mentioned my blog! The cycling has been amazing for general fitness and I’m sure helps me through squash games. Mind you, there are times when my legs are burst, during a match and the next morning on the commute!
